What Is A Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners are Registered Nurses who have completed a four-year Bachelors Degree in Nursing, plus a Masters Degree in Nursing and a Nurse Practitioners Degree/Certification. This additional education prepares the Nurse Practitioner to perform physical exams, routine office visits, order lab work, x-rays, medications and treatments for the patient. A Nurse Practitioner has access to a physician at all times to assist with complex medical problems.

The State of North Carolina requires Nurse Practitioners to pass a national exam which tests their medical knowledge. They are then licensed by the North Carolina Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
